Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology that deals
with mental health problems. Students who study clinical psychology
learn about different types of psychological ailments like
bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. They also learn how to
prevent and treat different types of mental illness through
prescribing medication and other therapeutic techniques.
Students who earn clinical psychology degrees can go on to
become practicing psychotherapists or psychiatrists. They
also may conduct research on things like the causes of certain
types of mental illness or the effectiveness of new drugs.
Most work in office or hospital settings, though others are
employed in schools and research facilities.
Clinical psychologists may further specialize in fields like
child psychology or experimental psychology. Though there
are many career options for students holding a masters degree
in clinical psychology, a PhD will allow for many more possibilities
to work with patients in a practice.
